Welcome to my current series of oil paintings,
featuring the surface of water as the membrane between spaces
A water surface is the place where multiple worlds meet. It is a place where what is inside and what is outside is debatable, where what is real and what is only seeming is called into question. Reflection and shadow appear on these surfaces and alter the viewers' vision of what is under the water and what exists in the world above the surface. Three different realms emerge: the underneath, the above, and the surface itself. All these qualities reflect questions of identity that I have explored in previous work.
Reference photos were mostly taken at Lakeside Park in Kitchener, ON, and Columbia Lake woods, in Waterloo. I also made ceramic sculptures to drop into the water, simulating imaginary worlds below the surface.
